Tokyo (CNN) -- Six Chinese maritime surveillance ships briefly entered waters around a group of islands at the center of a heated territorial dispute between Tokyo and Beijing, ignoring warnings from the Japanese authorities amid escalating tensions in the region.

The Chinese ships arrived near the uninhabited islands -- which Japan calls Senkaku and China calls Diaoyu -- on Friday morning and began patrols and "law enforcement," China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported.

The islands, situated in the East China Sea between Okinawa and Taiwan, are currently under Japanese control, but China claims they have been an "inherent" part of its territory "since ancient times." The long-running argument over who has sovereignty has resulted in occasionally violent acts of public protest.

The United States,a key ally of Japan, has repeatedly urged Tokyo and Beijing to resolve the dispute through dialogue. U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta will meet with his counterparts in Japan and China during a visit to the region that begins this weekend, the Department of Defense said Thursday.

The Chinese ships entered Japanese territorial waters Friday despite warnings from the Japanese Coast Guard, said Shinichi Gega, a spokesman for Japan's 11th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters.

The vessels had all left the waters by mid-afternoon and headed north, the Japanese Coast Guard said later Friday, noting that sea in the area was getting rough as a huge storm, Super Typhoon Sanba, approached from the south.

Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura said Japan would intensify its own patrols of the area in response to what he described as an "unprecedented scale of invasion" of Japanese waters.

Tokyo has protested the "inappropriate, illegal act" to the Chinese authorities, Fujimura said.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said Japan would "take all possible measures to ensure security" around the islands.

Two of the Chinese ships responded to a Japanese Coast Guard vessel's warning by reiterating China's territorial claim to the islands and saying they were carrying out patrol work, according to Gega. Japanese ships and helicopters are continuing their own patrols of the area, he said.

The controversial Chinese move to begin patrols around the islands follows the Japanese government's purchase of several of the islands from a private Japanese owner earlier this week, a deal that China described as "illegal and invalid."

The purpose of the patrols is "to demonstrate China's jurisdiction over the Diaoyu Islands and its affiliated islets and ensure the country's maritime interests," Xinhua reported Friday, citing a government statement.

This week, China announced what it said were the boundaries of its territorial waters around the islands to back up its claim of sovereignty. It said it had filed a copy of the announcement with U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday to comply with international law.

But Fujimura insisted Friday that the islands are an "integral part of Japanese territory" under international law, highlighting how directly opposed the two sides are.

Animosity between the two countries over the islands runs deep.

They have come to represent what many Chinese people see as unfinished business: redressing the impact of the Japanese occupation of large swathes of eastern China during the 1930s and 1940s.

China says its claim goes back hundreds of years. Japan says it saw no trace of Chinese control of the islands in an 1885 survey, so formally recognized them as Japanese sovereign territory in 1895.

Japan then sold the islands in 1932 to descendants of the original settlers. The Japanese surrender at the end of World War II in 1945 only served to cloud the issue further.

The islands were administered by the U.S. occupation force after the war. But in 1972, Washington returned them to Japan as part of its withdrawal from Okinawa.

Tokyo's diplomatic corps suffered an unexpected setback Thursday when the newly appointed Japanese ambassador to China, Shinichi Nishimiya, collapsed in Tokyo and was hospitalized just two days after he was named to the post.

No matter who ownes sovereignty of the Diaoyu Islands, Japan is always the scourge of Asia. Japan has limited resources but a large number of population, and there's a symbol of Japan's aggression and invasion if they want to survive, this is a tendency which they are born with.

Why?  Everything they have done that is "bad", has been within their borders, or land that they have some historical claim to, including Tibet.  Unlike Japan or even Europe, they have no history of expansionism into areas that are not historically theirs, even though they could well have colonized half the world over the course of 2000 years as the World superpower.  Tianamen; everything, has been within its borders.  They mind their own business.  It's high time we mind our own.  That's why their economy is growing and ours is not.  Because we go fighting other people's wars, waste our money, are universally hated.  If a Chinese and an American go travelling, the Chinese person will have less to fear, except in the U.S.  Even the Europeans resent us.  Don't live in a dream world.

Here is the basic fact (which of course is always ignored by, for example CNN)
Postdam declaration:
"Japanese sovereignty shall be limited to the islands of Honshū, Hokkaidō, Kyūshū, Shikoku and such minor islands as we determine." As had been announced in the Cairo Declaration in 1943.[1]
So Diaoyu Island belongs to China without any doubt.
13 hours ago 84 Likes

screwjp:
As usual, people who take side of the issue, would pretend that they don't understand the word "we" as in the last part of the declaration "minor islands as we determine". US in 1971 based on the dislike has purposely handed over the islands to Japan without going thro' the "we", and since then, the island ownership is under dispute between China, Japan and Taiwan. Fact is, USA screwed up, and Japanese took advantage of it. Many people criticize China's act on this, like what US government did in 1971 which is based on dislike, rather than acted on facts.

KevinHee:
Chinese government has been quite reasonable here - they want to maintain the status quo, keeping this island in the "disputed" category and leave the ultimate resolution in the future.
Japanese right wing politicians were the ones who made Japanese government "buy" the island and instigated the whole thing, as they exploit the volatile situation and nationalistic sentiments.
A political party looking for unsavory gains by creating a mess... now why does that sound familiar?

Matthew Wypyszinski:
The chinese are leaving the islands in the disputed category because they know they have no claim over the islands in the international community. Trust me, if they felt they would seriously be backed internationally on this issue they would make their move right now and take them over before japan got a single word in edge wise.
I think that japan is perfectly reasonable in continuing business as usual here, if you let china complain that the islands are theirs and do nothing with them but leave them alone then eventually the islands REALLY WILL be theirs. Some times taking the hard line stance is the best thing you can do.
10 hours ago in reply to KevinHee 12 Likes

This report misses a very critical piece of information as a CNN report usually does.  According to the Potsdam Agreement signed by China, US, and Soviet union     in 1945, Japan shall return all land and islands it has stolen during the war back to its neighbours and it only has a valid jurisdiction within its original four islands.  Ryukyu(now called Okinawa by Japan) and the Diaoyu Island were part of those land stolen from China by Japan.  Japan is using it as a military frontier to contain the so called "China threat" (a threat that over millions of its people were killed brutally by the Fxxxing Japanese in a way you have never seen in human history during the World War II and beyond).  This is why Ryukyu people have a bitter dispute on the US base with the Japanese government.  Their unanswered question is that we are NOT Japanese and we don't hate China, why do you put almost ALL military burden on our shoulder and let us die first if anything bad happens between you and China???  With a blessing from the US, which is breaking its promise and liability in the Agreement, Japan is shamelessly taking these islands and treating them as its own.  What a mob country!
