(CNN) -- A massive explosion Wednesday injured at least 11 people and resulted in a building collapse and raging fire in Manhattan's East Harlem, authorities said.

A Con Ed spokesman Bob McGee said the utility received a call of a gas leak at 9:13 AM. The call came from a resident at one of the newer building on Park Avenue. The utility dispatched a truck two minutes later but it arrived after the explosion, the spokesman said.

Clouds of darksmoke rose over the largely residential area of red-brick tenements and small businesses after the the 9:30 a.m. blast.

Hundreds of firefighters responded, many spraying water on the roaring blaze from ladders, others furiously pulling bricks near the collapse.

Metro North commuter rail service was suspended as debris from the explosion landed on the elevated tracks across the street, authorities said.

"I heard an explosion," said a neighborhood resident named Angelica. "The impact of the explosion jammed the doors. I couldn't get out the house. It was so loud."

The New York police bomb squad responded to the scene, according to a law enforcement source.

"Two buildings have collapsed. I hope there is no one in there. It's just rubble," a worker at a nearby flea market said.

Dark smoke couldbe seen billowing for a three-block radius as hundreds of rescue officials descended on the scene.

MM:
I'm always amazedat the firefighters, EMTs, and policemen that charge into danger while everyoneelse is running in the opposite direction. I think we get so frequently annoyedby the blaring sirens disrupting our days that we forget about the men andwomen inside the vehicles, rushing to save lives, even if it means riskingtheir own.
they are heroes.

Jeffro:
its also theirjob...just saying

wotudezerv
right. it's theirjob to save us, help us. they chose that. don't forget that fact. what did youchoose to give to society? just saying.

Served my countryand all that it entails.
Marines 2001 – 2009

I did too. Navy'83-'89 I served. I am proud I did. It was my choice. I am not a hero. You arewelcome.

Tony tyler
we all givesomething in society.. just because a person chooses a certain profession doesnot mean that they are gods.. thousands of truck drivers die each year due towork related injuries but we do not worship them.

Bryce
It's their job, which they chose to do. Other people choose different jobs. It doesn't meanthey're not contributing to society, they're just doing it in a different way.

dazzy
Like DMV employees in Chicago, truly heroes

ATL_VM
yes and it's yourJOB to respond to explosions, why are we turning this into a my job is betterthan your job discussion... we applaud your efforts.. just don't get the wholeyou are SUPPOSED to do your job and therefore you get special reward for doingwhat you CHOSE to do.. yes lives are at risk, and only certain people are goodat what you do, no denial there. I just feel like you can pound your chest andsay "look at me, I did my job" and EXPECT a pat on the back.

NO! you did yourjob, if you DID NOT do this job someone else would have. It's not like you areelite! YOU were simply the FIRST to respond, doesn't mean you were BETTER.

Snobsuncle
I guess you wouldconsider me a hero then.
I don't voterepublican.

Onefootforwad
I can see why CNNdisables comments.....on tragedies.....the trolls come out to play

Joey rogers
They chose thisjob, they weren't forced into this position. That is why they are heroes.

Mike markos
Yes its theirjob.. and yes they chose it. But for the major risks they take, they makelittle to nothing. You can say they aren't hero's all you want, but they aredefinitely heroes. Why is it that those "service" jobs that exist inour country are treated as if they didn't deserve the recognition they aregiven. And for your information, any job that requires you to risk their livesfor the little money they make, would NOT be worth it for someone who was asselfish as you portray them to be.

Onefootforwad
I can see why CNNdisables comments on tragic news events.....it wakes up the trolls and theycome out and play.

Why so serious54
I work withspacecraft.

Mike
If you wouldn't doit for free, then you're not a hero. How many police officers flip out whentheir raise schedule gets extended? Cops here in NJ are always whining and theyaverage $85,000 a year writing tickets and responding to alarms and fights.

Mandy
And when they arewriting tickets and responding to alarms and fights - They are not doing theirjobs? and is it still not dangerous?
or is their job lowly and not honor worthy?
Ask the wife and family of a cop.. They are constantly worried about their guyin uniform. There is no way to know when some idiot would clip them with theircar while they are writing that ticket. Or when that drunk driver is going torefuse to stop and use their cars as a 3000lb flying projectile and killsomeone. A domestic abuse can quickly escalate if the cops don't intervene.

The reason mostgovts PAY for these services is to allow the 'HERO' to support their familiesand not worry about them while they are risking their lives.
We have cops handing out torches and light sticks to kids on Halloween - tohang around their necks - to keep them safe. Don't you think the cops wouldrather be with their children looking out for their safety instead of being onthe roads?

Goldenparachute
Everyone gives inthier own way and according to their capacity. Not everyone was cut out to be afire-fighter and that is ok.

Flyonwall
everyone who worksand pays taxes gives back to society so get off your pedestal

Repeal the 16thamendment
Some give a LOTmore than 49%.

Art vandelay
Glad theycontribute to society, but some also get paid for it. A lot less humble.

Dot
Are you sayingthey shouldn't get paid? Are you one of those people who want somethingfor nothing? Those people who want war, highways, police protection, clean water, but oooohhhh, don't make them pay taxes. And they wonder whyteachers want to get paid. They don't do anything but babysit.

Art vandelay
I am not sayingthey shouldn't get paid, we need to pay them or else we'd have a lot less ofthem. I'm provoking the idea thata lot of them do it for the money.
Don't get allbu++hurt like I'm an anarchist that doesn't want to pay taxes. Don't stereotypeme. I didnt' say anything about taxes. And I do agree with you on teachers, Ithink some of them are given too much credit too.

Mandy
Army and Navyfight to make you safe too - and they get paid for it as well. Doesn't meantheir job is any less dangerous or any less honor worthy.
Giving respect and honor where it is DUE is the least we can do.

B10HZRD
^This. +1Internets.
I don't CARE thatthey get paid, they still risk their lives regularly in order to keep US safe.
Seriously how canpeople NOT see that?

Mandy
I agree :) . Idon't except trolls on the internet to feel sympathy. BUT some are downrightblind and don't see the good in other people.
It is like saying it is NO big deal that Bill Gates donates cause he makes alot of money. BUT - he would probably make a lot of money regardless of whetherhe donates or not. Just accept the good deed for what it is - a GOOD DEED!!

B10HZRD
Honestly.. ithappens when folks forget the difference between a Right and a Privilege

SFtoBoston
If I could getpaid what firefighters get paid to work 3 days a week, I'd charge into a firetoo.

Mandy
Maybe you shouldJOIN the firefighters then... it is NOT a closed society.

Breadly Mead
They get paid goodmoney to squirt water on fires. VN vets got paid 25cents an hour, spare me theconstant praise of firefighters being heroes

zenobia
I chose 4 tours toVietnam in the Army Special Forces (Abn), what did you choose

Doug
Any they get apretty decent paycheck for that "contribution" to society. Don'tforget that. Just saying.

Roseanne523
They still getthat decent paycheck whether or not they risk their lives to rescue people ornot and they still do.

ATL_VM
I think what theyare trying to say is they KNEW what they are getting themselves into..therefore they take their job SERIOUSLY and do it well...
They did CHOOSEit, but should they be rewarded or given special recognition for doing theirjob? I don't think so.
Maybe they CHOSEthis job to get the high profile attention.. don't YOU forget that.
There arepublicity junkies..in this world. I know a few myself.. it's a rush.
It's STILL theirjob!

Hairguy
my buddy is abanker. he STOLE from society and he is living well. only ldiots worry abouthelping others. help yourself. this is capitalism, not socialism

raphaeltrumpetsound
Not all get thejob to save lives...they get the job to pay bills.
Some people areaddicted to the rush of, NOT SAVING LIVES, but just rushing into danger.

Snobsuncle
If they didn'tsacrifice their lives for the good of community, there are countless otherdemocrats waiting to step in.
I hunt Big Foot.

pbj
Most people don'tgive anything to society. If you think anything you actually do benefitssociety you are a bit egotistic. Very few jobs offer anything to help society.Jeff may work with orphans, but there is a never ending supply of parentlesschildren, so he really isn't help society in the least. Firemen running into abuilding help us, but they aren't adding anything to society, either. They are geatto have, but they aren't society changers.
