With relations between the US and China said to be at their lowest ebb in 15 years, the challenges facing the next US president are laid bare by a research project that aims to shatter myths about the Asian giant.

The US and China have shown they can cooperate on issues such as climate change, but the relationship has taken a hit recently, notably over Beijing’smilitary expansion in the South China Sea. The rhetoric of election candidates such as Donald Trump over trade, and China’s economic slowdown, have added to the strain.

Asian countries have been playing a balancing game. Economically they all depend on China. Some but not all countries look to US for security. Is US acting like a supersized body guard? If the world is not captialism I would bet the US is winning.

China's "military build-up" in the South China Sea might have something to do with seeing an American aircraft carrier strike group with 65+ attack warplanes sailing merrily through these waters, 'on patrol'.
It can't look too friendly to the Chinese I'd have thought.
"A carrier strike group (CSG) is an operational formation of the United States Navy.
It is composed of roughly 7,500 personnel, an aircraft carrier, at least one cruiser, a destroyer squadron of at least two destroyers and/or frigates, and a carrier air wing of 65 to 70 aircraft.
A carrier strike group also, on occasion, includes submarines, attached logistics ships and a supply ship".

That would be a wise assessment if only we wound our clocks, and time itself, backwards.

A simple search shows that your timeline of provocation is desperately flawed.

Indeed, Vietnam and other smaller states had provocatively built 48 installations on those disputed islands (totally unreported in our media) whose sovereignty we are neutral over. This provoked China to respond with a handful of their own. At the same time we have had the Asia pivot to sustain the Pentagon's stated potential embargo threat over China's 90% trade jugular.

Agree…and I fail to see how some of our actions or those who perhaps act as proxy for us cannnot be intentional to disrupt.

同意。。。

Specifically in a similiar manner and not to defend the heinous despot in charge of North Korea but…

The slam on North Korea in the form of a comedy was indeed the product of a japanese company. To us this appeared simple comedy satire. The Japanese in their colonization of Korea went to the extend of replaceing Korean names with Japanese and useing young women as pleasure vehicles for their troops.

And then a japanese company makes a satire of their leader. Heinous despot he is, the people do not consider him worse than the Japanese and their conduct in the running of their colonial empire. So such can be a known to create a response by their leader and likely all in North Korea who knew of it.

Such things in fact enable his rule to continue. A clear present danger. The choice becomes, who is worse he or them.
Seems they have to know that.
WE cannot stop a japanese company from producing what they will, but we can serve to not favor it by various means if it is necessary. We actually favored it and supported it.

Which was bound to cause trouble and it did. Of a minor sort this time.

Is the only way the U.S. knows to stay "exceptional" is to pull other nations down instead of improving itself?

Someone has to protect a continent that can't seem to protect itself.

Ah, the white man's burden.

Ah yes, when China adopts the mantle of the world's major power, all will be sweet. Think again.
Would prefer as an equal world as possible but if needing a leading power would much prefer it to be America than China.
If you think American manifest destiny is ugly, just have a look at China. Scary stuff, starting with the patently absurd south China sea dots.

Shenmejoe turnip2 14h ago
And if you look closely at the seas with the dashed lines, you'll notice more American naval power patrolling those waters than the warships of any other nation.

Shenmejoe turnip2 14h ago
So it seems that the US has its own dashes of demarcation for control of the seas.

In South Korea Americans at first tried to continue various Japanese aspects of control by utilizing Japanes functionaries…till the peoples started to riot.
Then the installed Koreans in all areas.

So I persume the Chinese consider the Americans as not being above and beyond aiding their historical enemies the Japanese. AS so does North korea. Japan did some heionus deeds here not all that long ago and I think it requires restraint on the Chinese side to not react emotionally.

And now Japan is rearming itself. For China that is most ominous.

PulSamsara g_reader_1 4h ago
Japan can have a 50 missile arsenal (enough for China's eastern seaboard) by building it over a long weekend.

Does it always have to be the case that, if the US is not perceive as top dog, it has to resort to conflict? The rebirth of the cold war as a justification to boost the military-industrial complex earnings. Why must pseudo defence and security projects always takes priority over national nation building projects?
We see the US pushing Russian back into the cold, and now that China is a strong partner with Russia, she is also being given the cold shoulder. If this continues, then the future is not looking bright.

Biggest threat to world peace is the American Empire..Obama has just announced that the U.S. will spend over $1 Trillion to "upgrade " its Nuclear Weapons and Delivery Systems...
